All Squared Graham Crow

All Squared is a new suite of works by Tauranga artist Graham Crow. Working within the confines of the square, Crow explores its many facets through shifting monochromatic tones, light, and texture. 

Rooted in abstraction, the works resist a fixed meaning. For Crow, this narrative silence creates a space for contemplation, allowing the eye, and then the mind, to absorb their textures, forms, and tonal shifts. Combining his signature exploration of light and texture with a rigorous geometric language, All Squared is a body of work that is at once restrained and enchanting.

Crow is drawn to the square for its inherent sense of equality and balance. He describes it as ‘democratic’; each side is equal, with no predetermined orientation, reflecting his broader interest in challenging the boundary between painting and sculpture. Inspired by the pioneering geometric abstraction of Josef Albers and Piet Mondrian, alongside the principles of minimalism, these works invite a quiet contemplation. By reducing the visual language, Crow asks the audience to turn their attention to the subtle relationships between surface, colour, and light.
