Tamariki Portrait Show
Courtesy of all tamariki (children), whānau (families), and kura (schools).
To celebrate the reopening of Toi Tauranga Art Gallery, local schools were invited to take part in a special project. Tamariki were asked to create a small watercolour self- portrait — a vibrant expression of colour, creativity, and individuality. Together, these works form a joyful presentation of our community’s youngest artists. These children’s artworks proudly share gallery space with some of our region’s most well-known and accomplished adult artists, highlighting the shared spirit of creativity that connects us all.
The response to this project has been incredible. Schools from across the region — from small rural schools, Kura Kaupapa Māori to Montessori and large urban schools — all embraced the opportunity to contribute. Representing over 500 young artists aged 5 to 13, this exhibition captures a remarkable range of faces, moods, and styles. Each piece shines with imagination and authenticity, reflecting the freedom and talent of our next generation of creators.
