July School Holiday Programme: matARiki AR Magic

Celebrate Matariki with Toi Tauranga Art Gallery and Te Tuhi Mareikura Trust’s matARiki Sculpture Trail.

Taking inspiration from incredible digital sculptures, tamariki will design and create their own Matariki themed masterpiece. The matARiki Sculpture Trail is a groundbreaking, free, and interactive augmented reality (AR) exhibition held in the Bay of Plenty, Aotearoa, during the Matariki festival period. The trail brings together traditional Māori, or mātauranga Māori, with modern digital technology, allowing participants to use their smartphones or tablets to view and interact with 3D digital sculptures.

Children will make a small waka hoe (paddle), using colour theory and different paint techniques to bring their artwork to life. They’ll then work with a variety of other media to attach pattern and detail to the handle.

With six sessions to choose from, at a cost of $25 per child, aged 5–12 years, we’ve got your Matariki school holidays sorted. We can’t wait to see you there!
